King’s Van Iersel and Bradley Tech’s Smith Named MCC Student-Athletes of the Week (Feb. 9)
Zef Van Iersel (Rufus King High School) and Jakari Smith (Bradley Tech High School) were named the Milwaukee City Conference Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 1-7.
Van Iersel made a splash at the boys swim conference championship meet last Friday, capturing four combined individual and relay victories. The senior touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.20 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.91) races. Van Iersel carried the momentum into Rufus King’s team events, helping his teammates to first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
On the court, Smith stitched together an explosive three-game stretch for the Trojans. The senior averaged 40 points per game on 77.5 percent shooting, highlighted by his 50-point outburst against Carmen Northwest. Smith also chipped in 12.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.6 steals per game as Bradley Tech went 2-1 on the week to hold onto third place in the Gold Division standings.
