About the Milwaukee City Conference

The Milwaukee City Conference (MCC) serves high school student-athletes throughout the Milwaukee Public Schools system, as well as other affiliate members around the city of the Milwaukee.

The MCC is dedicated to the philosophy that a student-athlete’s core responsibilities involve the pursuit of personal growth through academic work and team experiences. We recognize that athletic programming is an extension of academic and practical instruction. By participating in organized sports offered by the MCC, our student-athletes are building friendships, learning new skills, and creating lifelong memories.

History

According to William Lamers’ “Our Roots Go Deep” (a book detailing the history of MPS), the first competition on record occurred when East Side High School (now Riverside) organized a football team to play the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company squad in 1893. A year later, the East Side (Riverside) and South Side (South Division) High Schools organized a track meet for the first interscholastic competition between public school teams. Those same schools then played an interscholastic football game in the fall of 1894.

In 1949, the position of the commissioner of athletics was created, and in 1956, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors assumed the financing of the high school athletics program in order to maintain equity among schools in economically disadvantaged districts or with smaller populations. Today, the MCC is a branch of Milwaukee Recreation, which itself is a department of Milwaukee Public Schools.
